Recliner Chair or Sleeper Chair – Which One is Right for You?

We’re often asked which is the better option: the Croyde Recliner Chair or the Croyde Sleeper Chair.

While we don't play favourites and we can't make the decision for you, we've put together a short guide to help you choose.

Here are 5 key things you would usually consider.

 1-2   Price

The great news is that both options are similarly priced, so budget doesn’t have to be the deciding factor. Now that cost is off the table, let’s dive into the details…

 2-3   Reclining or Flat-Lying?

The Recliner Chair is designed to recline up to approximately 60°, providing comfortable support but not a fully flat position.

On the other hand, the Sleeper Chair fully converts into a flat, full-length bed, ideal for overnight hospital visitors. However, it does not recline.

While a flat bed is often the preferred option for accommodating overnight guests, the Recliner Chair remains a great alternative.

3-2   Patient Use

If the chair is intended for patient use, the Recliner Chair offers a tall backrest for neck and shoulder support, and side wings for extra privacy—an advantage when used in open areas. The high backrest is especially beneficial for longer periods of resting or care.

In departments such as maternity and neonatal, where biological nurturing and kangaroo care are practiced, the reclined position can be really valuable.

The Sleeper Chair, with its lower backrest and chaise-longue position, does not recline but is still very comfortable.

4-2   Footprint

For smaller spaces, the dimensions of the chairs may be important.

A standard bedside chair is around 62 cm wide.

The Recliner Chair has a compact design at 70 cm wide, while the Sleeper Chair is larger at 90 cm.

Measuring your available space is essential to ensure a comfortable fit around the bed.

5-2   Manoeuvrability

Both chairs are equipped with wheels for easy movement, each featuring brakes and multi-directional wheels for smooth maneuvering in tight spaces.

The Recliner Chair has larger wheels, which can be helpful if frequent movement around the ward or between departments is needed. Its tall backrest also provides an ergonomic height for pushing.

Comfort

Both chairs are designed with deep foam cushioning to ensure maximum comfort for extended periods of rest or sleep.

Cleaning

Both chairs are built for high-traffic hospital environments and can be cleaned using hospital-approved wipes and chlorine-based disinfectant solutions.

Colour

You can choose from the same wide range of colours for either chair.

Conclusion

Ultimately, there is no wrong choice—both chairs are designed for high-demand hospital settings.

  • The Sleeper Chair is ideal for offering a comfortable, flat-lying bed for overnight visitors and can transform from chair to bed in seconds.
  • The Recliner Chair may be the better choice for patients who will spend significant time in the chair.
The reclining function and supportive backrest can be very valuable. Its compact footprint is also perfect for smaller spaces.
